Is Assisted Living Right For You?
Assisted living facilities are geared towards people who wish to live as
independently as possible, yet need assistance with some Activities of Daily
Living (ADLs). ADLs include eating, bathing, dressing, laundry,
housekeeping, and assistance with medications. Assisted living facilities
offer help with these activities, and can be seen as the intermediate
alternative to independent living and a nursing home.
An assisted living facility is designed to assist elderly persons who are able
to care for themselves except for a few activities. They are often
valuable when the person in question needs help preparing meals, bathing,
dressing, performing household chores, experiences memory problems, or becomes
easily confused. Nursing homes, however, are more appropriate for
those that are very frail, are not able to care for themselves, and have
numerous health care requirements.
Assisted living residences typically:
-
Minimize the need to relocate
-
Accommodate each residents' changing needs and preferences
-
Preserve residents' dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, choice, and
safety
-
Encourage family and community involvement
